(late September)A short and bumpy detour to the north of the Barrier Highway is the Aboriginal Rock Paintings at Mt Grenfell, an area of low laying sandstone rock formations with many overhanging ledges. These ledges have protected the remaining paintings from the worse of the erosion by wind and rain. The many paintings were protected behind wire cages, a necessary evil I suppose to help their preservation. Unfortunately the surrounding bush was over-run with and decimated by feral goats. The bushes and trees have now vegetation below 4 ft and the herb communities decimated leaving nothing but bare earth and straggly lolly pops. This really detracted from the beauty of the paintings and atmosphere of this sacred sight.

Great set of pics Jamie - shame the cage protecting them is so ugly!
ReplyDeleteWow, you're right! The light really accentuates the uniqueness of the paintings!
